Essay question;

By both their actions and refusal to help, the society represented by the Sealand woman shows itself to be as prejudiced and intolerant as the people of Waknuk. Do you agree?

Stand: I do not agree with the statement that the society described by the Sealand woman shows itself to be as prejudiced and intolerant as the people of Waknuk.

PEEP When the Sealand woman refused to go back to Waknuk to save Rachel, it wasn't because of selfishness or fear. It was because they were afraid that the distance was too far, and that their fuel wouldn't be enough for them to return to Sealand safely as they had already travelled a long way on the aircraft. The fuel left might just be enough for them to get back safely to Sealand from Fringes, and thus she didn't have the choice but to not save Rachel. For example, when the Sealand women said to them that "Of course we would if we could, but it is a technical matter. You see, the journey was longer than we expected." shows that the Sealand actually wanted to save Rachel, however she didn't expect the distance travelled to be so long. "If we were to go to Waknuk and make another landing and take off there, and try to carry four of you, as well as Petra, we should use up all our fuel before we could reach home.” the sealand woman is trying to explain to them their current situation. They cannot fly back to Waknuk, save Rachel and fly back to Sealand. They definitely wouldn't have enough fuel to bring them safely back to Sealand, the fuel would be drained before reaching Sealand.

Conclusion Therefore i do not agree with the statement that the society described by the Sealand woman shows itself to be as prejudiced and intolerant as the people of Waknuk.

Essay question;

The end justifies the means: To preserve their species and way of life, the people of Labrador are justified in their various measures taken to ensure the Purity of their species. [edited]

Stand: I do not agree that the people of Labrador are justified in their various measures to ensure the Purity of their species.

PEEP: They should not kill, exile or sterilize the blasphemies in the society. It would be unfair to them as they did not choose to be blasphemy with Deviations. For example, Sophie is a normal girl with an extra toe on each feet. However, she did not choose to have an extra toe, and live in fear. Thus, it will not be fair to kill them just because they want to preserve their species and way of life. "She was simply an ordinary little girl- if a great deal more sensible and braver than most." this shows that in the opinion of David, Sophie's toe did not change her. In fact, she was more obedient and courageousthan the norms. Moreover an extra toe did not change her personality and character. Thus she should not be punished for that. Although people in Labrador are not very supportive of Joseph Strom's idea of purity, it did not stop him from continuing his mindset. "There were people who disapproved of his meticulousness, saying that the local Deviation-rate, which ahd shown a steady overall improvement and now stood at half what it had been in my grandfather's time..." proves that people of Labrador did disapprove of Joseph's way of preserving Purity. He is determined to attain his goal, which is to keep Waknuk's great name for Purity. "All the same, the Waknuk district had a great name for Purity." shows that whatever measure Joseph Strom had implied was to keep Waknuk's reputaion.

Essay question;

The end justifies the means: To preserve their species and way of life, the people of Labrador are justified in their various measures taken to ensure the Purity of their species.

Point: I do not agree that the people of Labrador are justified in their various measures in order to ensure the Purity of their species and thier way of life. My point is that it will be unfair to them because they didn't choose to be be different from the norms, and it's not up to them to decide. And that there must be certain limits to the measure they are taking.

Elaboration: It will be unfair to them because even if they're different from the norms, it doesn't stop them to continue living on. The people of Labrador do not have the rights to 'punish' them because of their difference. They did not choose to be different, thus it's not their fault that they're blasphemy. For example Sophie and the telepaths, even though Sophie has an extra toe on each feet, and the telepaths has the extra ability to communicate using thought-shapes. However on the outside, they look perfectly normal. Sophie's personality and character did not differ from the norms at all. On actual fact, her personality is way better than the rest of the norms. And the telepaths on the other hands, did not have any physical deformations, just because they have an extra ability. They look exactly like the image of god, only a slight difference does not give the People of Labrador the right to punish them.

Evidence: "I was abruptly perturbed- and considerably puzzled, too." this quote tells me that David himself, did not understand why did the people of Labrador have to treat the non-norms different when he sees nothing wrong with them. "She was simply an ordinary little girl- if a great deal more sensible and braver than most. Yet according to the definition..." this show that Sophie was in fact better than the norms who had the image of god. However Davids finds it unfair to Sophie that according to the definition, she couldn't be who she is.

Essay question;

Sophie is a better choice to be David’s wife instead of Rosalind. Do you agree?

Point: I do not agree to the point that Sophie is a better choice to be David's wife instead of Rosalind, because Sophie is not a telepath.

Elaboration: The difference between the telepaths and the rest is that they can communicate through these thought-shapes instead of machinery words, Sophie definitely don't possess such skill/ ability. Through Anne's incident, we've got to know that telepaths are not suppose to marry a norm, or perhaps, an opposite without telepathy skills. They told Anne that by making a decision to marry a norm, is to cripple herself off the ability she'd been possessing since young, and to leave the world she used to be in. If David choose to marry Sophie, he will be following Anne's footsteps, thus Rosalind, a telepath, is a better choice to be David's wife.

Evidence: "It'd be like tying yourself for life to a cripple." where 'cripple' refers to non-telepaths. "Michael told her it'd be likepretedning to have only one arm because the person one wants to marry has only one arm." is trying to prove that if a telepath ever marries a non-telepath, it would be like living in self denial.

Essay question;

Uncle axle and Mary perform the role of parenthood to David more than his actual parents. Discuss.

Point: I agree to the point that Uncle Axle and Mary performed the role as David's parents more than David's biological parents.

Elaboration: Since young, David already tells the wonder of his dreams to his sister, Mary. And I believe, kids would confide to their parents about how wonderful and magnificent is their dream(s). However, David confided to his sister, like as if she's his mother. And, she even told him not to tell anyone, as to keep him safe. When David is in doubt or trouble, the first person he will turn to is Uncle Axle. Although Uncle Axle is not his direct relative, David still trust him a lot. At a young age of 10, he already regarded Uncle Axle as his best friend. As a 10 year old kid, David should be every close to his parents, or maybe a mummy-boy. But, because his father, Joseph Strom is a strict person with strong principles in life. Therefore, David would not choose to confide to him about his own troubles. Moreover, Uncle Axle knows David better then Joseph Strom, for example David's identity as a telepaths. David feel better telling Uncle Axle because he will give him advises and instruct him on what to do in order to keep himslef safe, without being disclosed. Unlike Joseph Strom, his own biological father that might just eliminate David and the other telepaths if he knew. There fore Uncle Axle is like a father in the heart of David.

Evidence: For example, both when David told Uncle Axle that his problem of thought shapes and Anne wanted to marry Alan, both the case, Uncle Axle gave him very good advises of what to do. And told him what was right and what was wrong. When Uncle Axle know about the fact that David is actually a telepath, he did not expose him, he even told him what to do. And secondly, when he told Uncle Axle about Anne's decision on wanting to marry Alan, he did not expose Anne. And he even gave David instruction on what to do in order to prevent posing of any danger to David and the other telepaths.
